Camp near Fredricksburg Va,  December 30 1862
Dear Wife
I am favored with an opportunity to send you a fiew lines by AJ Stires  he will leave here today or in the morning to go
home  I have no news much to wright   we moved our camp yesterday about a mile closer to the station and I think we will
stay here sometime    perhaps this winter the yankeys has fallen back behind the hill on the other side of the river and
some has left I think   I dont think they will make another advance here   I was on picket the other night and saw a plenty
of them in shooting distance on the river bank but we was not allowed to shoot at them unless they shot at us   James
Beck  and James Butner and Wm Ogburn was here last night   they are all well   we have a good many visitors from other
regt)  I have not saw much Christmas here   we drew a soon full of shugar (to a man) and a half pint of molases to ten
men is all the extrys we got   Jackson baked a shougar cake and give me a piece  it tast like home a gooddel  A good
many got boxes from home with things in them that made them a good Christmas  I should like if you could send me one
box with about three galens of brandy and some butter and some clothes  if I had an old quilt it would not hurt as I have
nuthing but the blanket I took from home and it is getting very thin but if I could get the brandy 3 or 4 galens here safe
and sime butter I can sell the brandy as fast as I can  quart at ten and fifteen dollers  some pay as high as 35 dollers a
quart  I could sell two or three gallens for a couple hundred doller  butter is worth two dollers and a half a pound  Aples is
worth two dollars a dozen little ones at that so you know my money at them liekscand hold out fur a month wages  corn
meal is worth a doller a galon  If you conclude to send me a box send it by express  these fellers that has been at home
might see to bringing boxes through but they are like by them like they are by staying here they dont want to do it we had
all our clothes stolen when the battle was but what we had on and our knapsacks and all that was in them  if you send me
a box send me some peg wood to mend my shoes  saw off two or three block and a peg in all  a needle and a little thread
If I should not get the box it wont brake me and if I get it safe I can make more than my wags by a good del  by express I
think it would come safe of the company will have to pay the value of it  I dont think a box the size I want would cost more
than 8 or ten dollers to come to Fredricksburg  a little dride fruit would not hurt to fill up in the box and put hickry hoop
around the corners so it wont burst  when I could fix up a box right if I was at home   you must take a receipt for the box
when you put it in the railroad agents care and send the receipt to me in a letter as soon as you get it so I can get the box
when it comes  if you send any.  I received a letter from you dated December the 23 yesterday  Wright soon  Direct your
letter Fredricksburg  Hoods Division Laws Brigade 57 Regt Company D  Yours   JC Zimmerman
