Notes: 1850 Forsyth Census shows Solomon Ledford age 50 as a farmer, wife Martha
1850 census shows Albert Brindle age 28 wife Polinna C.; Washington his son age 15 living at home. How are these
people connected with Dr. Shuman????
1860 census no mention of Brindle family.
1860 Solomon Ledford lived in the Old Town District.
In 1860 Dr. Shuman had a Sarah J. Hege age 14 living with him.
In 1860 Darius Starbuck had an Anna Hege age 7 living with him.
WHERE DID THEY ALL LIVE IN 1860?
Silas Adams in 1860 lived in the Broadbay area.
Darius H. Starbuck lived in the Salem Area 1354/1287 (house #/family#)
Hettie Shober and Catherine Blickinsderfer age 51 lived 1355/1288

WILL OF FREDERICK SHUMAN
I Frederic H. Shuman of the town of Salem in the county of Forsyth and State of North Carolina being of sound mind
and memory, but sondering the uncertainty of my earthly existence do make and declare this my last Will & Testament
in manner & form? following to wit:
Item 1st: I will that my Executor herein after named shall provide for my body a decent burial suitable to the wishes of
my dear wife & friends & pay all funeral expenses, together with my just debt to whomsoever owing & the costs &
expenses of the administration of my estate out of the monies of my estate.
Item 2: I give & devise to my beloved wife Theodora Shuman the sum of two hundred & fifty dollars to be paid semi-
annually by my executor as long as she shall live out of the dividends of the stock, which I own in the _____ Bank of
the State; the first payment which is to be made within three months of my decease. And the balance of the dividend I
direct my Executor to deposit in the Salem Savings Bank ____ usual terms & conditions & take a receipt or ____ for
the same with the privilege reserved to my Executor to withdraw them and otherwise withdraw them as he may see
proper. I further give and bequeath to my said wife the house & lot wherein I now live, during her natural life subject
to the rules & regulations of the town of Salem, and absolutely to her all my household & kitchen furniture and all
other property in and about the house & lot except my notes, bond, bank accounts certificates of Bank Stock and
other _____ in action.
Item 3; I give and bequeath to Soloman Ledford the tract of land containing about one hundred and forty acres near
old Town and whereon he now lives which he contracted to purchase of me, and my Executor to surrender to him his
bonds for the purchase money.
Item 4: I give and bequeath to Albert Brindle & Washington Brindle the tract of land on which they respectively live,
and which they contracted to purchase of me adjoining the lands of Charles Clinard & others & my executor is to
surrender to them their respective bonds for the purchase money.
Item 5: And whereas I recently purchased from Henry Nutt a negro man name Jerry in order that he might be
emancipated with his children known as the Adams negroes now held by my Executor _______ ______ I give and
bequeath to my said Executor D.H. Starbuck the said negro Jerry in trust that he will emancipate him at the time he
gives the other negroes aforesaid their freedom and the present _____ now due me for this year hire(?) of Jerry & his
heirs hereafter I direct my Executor to hold & use for the benefit of said negros & more particularly to aid in removing
said negro to some free State whenever my Executor to _____ remove and the other negros aforesaid ______-
Item 6: I give & bequeath to my Executor D.H. Starbuck one thousand dollars which he shall be entitled to within
twelve months of my decease in lieu of the commission? which he may _____ on my estate & which he declares
himself satisfied with and bequeath to his wife Ellen the hone half which I now own _____ carriage now in his
possession.
Item 7: I give and bequeath all the residue of my estate both real and ______ heretofore disposed of under this my
Will to D.H. Starbuck, Executor to hold in trust for the use & benefit of the Board of _______ to hold in trust for the
uses & benefit of the Board of ______ among the heathen, of the Moravian Church, which Board located at
Barthelsdorf near ____ in the Kingdowm of Saxony known as the Missionary Department of the Unity’s Elders ____
of the Moravian Church _____ ______ ________ with all power herein given to my said Executor to transfer and
give over to said Board of Missions or their agent E.A. Dr. DeSweinitz or his successors in office in the town of Salem
the sale? of the property and estate intended to be disposed of by the _____
clause? or only the interest and dividends thereon at the option of my said Executor as he may think most conducive
to the purpose of the said Missions. But in case my said Executor may think it not best to transfer the whole of said
funds to said Board of Missions, then I desire him before making the annual payment of the dividends or interest to
require the agent of said Board living in Salem to furnish an annual statement, showing the proper application of the
said fund, by him received for the preceding year. I further require that in case my said Executor shall not have
transferred the whole of said funds to said Board before his death that he make an appointment by Will or otherwise
of a successor to take charge of said funds & execute the ____ in this my contained? for the use & benefit of said
Board of Missions the same manner as my Executor herein named is directed to do. But it is specially? enjoined on
my said Executor to make ____ transfers of these funds included in the 7th clause of my Will so as to pay the semi-
annual ______ directed to be ____ beloved wife during her life.
_____ regard to the collection of debts due me I desire _____to be indulgent to my debtors & to persue such _____
collecting or securing the _____ as may not _______________.
And in an especial manner I desire that the several Banks in which I own stock and particularly the Farmers Bank of
Greensboro may always refrain from using any portion of the capital stock for the purpose of declaring dividends & I
hereby request my Executor to protest against the same whenever he may be advised of such a derelection(?) of
duty.
Item 9: I hereby _____ my said Executor to sell at public or private sale at his option such property as may be
necessary to sell & likewise the house & lot whereon I now reside as soon as the estate of my beloved wife ceases
therein, and the proceeds thereof to be disposed of as directed in the 7th clause of this my Will.
Item 10: & lastly, I hereby constitute & appoint my friend D.H. Starbuck, Executor of this my last Will and Testament to
execute the same according to the true intent & meaning thereof. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand
and seal this 13th day of March A.D. 1862.

I Frederick H. Shuman do hereby add the following as codicil to the forgoing my last Will & Testament viz: I give &
bequeath to ________ ____ Pfohl the Treasurer of the Salem Poor fund Society the sum of fifty dollars for the use
& benefit of such for persons to whom said society by its rules & regulations furnish relief. Witness my hand & seal
this 16th? day of June A.D. 1862.
