Old Clemmonsville Township Soldiers

The Clemmons Courier, Oct 24, 2002

Clemmonsville was part of Davidson County until 1889.  This compilation of soldiers who fought in the Civil War 1861-1865 includes both Confederate and
Union soldiers, who were born in Clemmonsville, or lived in this community during the war.  Some families were split apart because of loyalties to the South or to
the preservation of the Union.  Many brothers enlisted together in the same regiment.

Census records indicate that Clemmonsville  had about 200 residents during the Civil War, and was considered an affluent area of planters, as well as a thriving
village of merchants and craftsmen.

During this war many of the local soldiers were killed in battles or died from disease in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania or in prison camps.  In many cases,
bodies of the soldiers were never brought back to Clemmonsville for burial; therefore, there are no tomb stones for these men.

In some cases Moravian ministers preached services for the slain soldiers in the graveyards of Hope and Muddy Creek and recorded these services in their
diaries, even giving the soldiers' company and regiemtn and place of death.  Some of the soldiers were buried in family graveyards in the Clemmonsville area,
and their tomb stones have been damaged or destroyed by vandalism or sprawling suburban development in western Forsyth County.  This list of veterans is by
no means complete.

Boundaries included in this compilation of Civil War veterans include Yadkin River to the west; Muddy Creek church on Fry Bridge Rd. to the south; highway 421
to the north and old Hope graveyard to the east.
