Mrs. Seippel reminded the chapter that the UDC is completely benevolent, is tax exempt by the Internal Revenue Service, and is non-political, non-racial and non-social.

            New members in 1974-75 were:

1.        Mrs. David Bouldin, who joined on the record of her great-grandfather, William Arney Shore, Company H, 5th Regiment, N.C. Senior Reserves.
2.        Mrs. Rozelind Marie Landquist Lentz. On May 16, 1922 she joined the Thomas Jethro Brown Chapter of the C of C, and has now transferred to the UDC.
3.        Mrs. Harold Weaver, who joined on the record of Martin L. Bost, Co. F, 9th Regiment, N.C. Calvary.
4.        Miss Mary Martin, a C of C transfer who joined on the record of B.S. Martin, Co. A, 22nd Regiment, N.C. Troops.
5.        Mrs. Margaret Stinson Tocce, who joined on the record of George Hobson, Co. F, 5th Regiment, N.C. Infantry.
6.        Mrs. Margaret Wise Goins, who joined on the record of Absolom Wise, Co. G, 51st Regiment, N.C. Infantry.
7.        Miss Elizabeth Kapp, who joined on the record of Z.T. Bynum, Co. H, 71st Regiment, N.C. Infantry.
8.        Miss Nancy Petree, who joined on the record of Isaac Petree, Capt. Eli Holland’s Co., 7th Regiment, N.C. Senior Reserves.
    
    Memorial services were read for the following members lost during 1974-1975:

1.        Mrs. Bess Transou Walker (Mrs. Robert Lee Walker) who joined the James B. Gordon Chapter on May 21, 1925.  She joined on the service of her uncle
       E.L. Transou, who belonged to Company A, First Regiment Sharpshooters of the NC Troops.  She had been recommended and her application signed by
      two Civil War veterans, Mr. R.A. Spainhour, Co. B of the N.C. Troops, and Mr. W.H. Clarke, Co. H., 46th Regiment of the Virginia Troops.  
2.        Mrs. A.C. Chamberlain - Real Daughter.
3.        Miss Caroline Leinbach - Real Daughter-Joined April 27, 1928, on the record of Julius Augustus Lineback, 26th Reg’t Band. NC.
4.        Mrs. R.P. Sartin - Real Daughter-  Joined Oct. 7, 1944 on the record of Lindsay George Lewis, Co., D, 5th Reg’t, NC Cav.
5.        Mrs. Kapp Ogburn (Mary Jenkins Miller), joined on the record of her grandfather Isaac Brown
6.        Mrs. Roy Peters (Thelma Ruth Haas). Joined Oct. 15, 1939 on the record of Allen Wiley Bingham, Co. 73?, 56th Reg’t VA.
    
             Other reports in general were made: Total of  $6,788.92 in the Scholarship Fund. There were 27 ladies in attendance at the Confederate Women’s Home.

            Mrs. E.D. Hudson, Mrs. George Corby, Mrs. Ferdinand Jones and Mrs. Roberson Freeman were elected delegates to the 78th Annual Convention which was held October 8-10
in Raleigh. The  following awards were made to our chapter:  Superior Chapter, Honorable Mention Carrie Watson Pearce Award, Welborne Loving Cup for most books to libraries,
Rochelle Silver Bowl for Crosses of Military Service, McKay Silver Pitcher for most C of C transfers and Dorsey Harris Silver Cup for best membership report.

    The following delegates were elected for the General Convention in Richmond, Virginia November 9-13: Mrs. Alvin Seippel, Mrs. Roberson Freeman, Mrs. Ferdinand Jones, Mrs.
Charles Weaver, and Mrs. O.F. Griffith, Jr.

            In October, Miss Nannie Dodson, Recorder of the Crosses, presented a World War II Cross of Military Service to Mr. Daniel Early, which was received by Mrs. Early.  The cross
was received on the record of Mr. Early’s great-great grandfather, William P. Sizemore, who served as corporal in Co. G, N.C. 30th Regiment, N.C. Troops.

    In November, The Real Daughters were presented: Mrs. Alphonse Daye, Mrs.Roy B. Disher, Mrs. Daniel Early and Mrs. John H. Myers.

    In March 1975, the  local Children of the Confederacy won a cup for the best year book at the State Convention held in Wilmington.  The convention will be held in Winston-Salem in
March 1976, and help will be asked of the UDC.  There were thirteen members of the Thomas Jethro Brown Chapter of the Children of the Confederacy  during the 1974-75 year.

    In May the Chapter held its Heroes Banquet at the Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church.  Fifty-seven members and friends attended, as well as the Norfleet Camp, Sons of the
Confederate Veterans.  Gene Brady, President of the N.C.Division, C of C was introduced as a special guest.  Mr. Thomas Boyles was commended for the marker placed in Mt. Olive
Graveyard in Stokes County, honoring his great-grandfather and grandmother (John and Charity Boyles), their one daughter and seven sons.  Six of the sons died in the War Between
the States.  Two of our own members, Mrs. Lawrence Hartman and Mrs. Richard Sheek, were recognized for their Bicentennial project of recording information from tombstones in
cemeteries in Forsyth County.  Two Real Daughters, Mrs. Roy Disher and Mrs. Daniel Early were present.

    Mrs. Alvin Seippel, President, advised the Chapter of the following:

•        To support the relocation of the Confederate Monument and the American Legion Monument from the Courthouse Square to a “Monument Square”, possibly on the Trade
Street Mall.  
•        Reported that the portrait of Robert E. Lee, which had hung for many years in the lobby of the Hotel Robert E. Lee, was now hanging in the Lee Room of the Hyatt House in
Winston-Salem.
•        Urged each member to write to her legislator on the following: Encouraging the State to build the Blockade Runner Museum; to endorse a commemorative stamp for Gen. Nathan
Bedford Forrest, and to approve  Jefferson Davis for election to the Hall of Fame.
•        The Building for the Museum of the Confederacy was under construction.
    
    Speakers of 1974 were: Mr. Marcus Flynt spoke on the life of General Nathan Bedford Forrest; Mrs. Beth Tartan, Food Editor of the Winston-Salem Journal, who spoke on “Foods
of One Hundred Years Ago”; Dr. J. Edwin Hendricks, associate professor of history at Wake Forest University; Mr. McLean Mitchell spoke on “The Decisive Battles of The War Between
the States”; Dr. David Smiley, history professor of Wake Forest University , spoke on “Religion in the Confederate Camps”;  Mr. Hamilton Horton, former member of the N.C. General
Assembly, spoke on “Jefferson Davis, The Man and The Statesman.”                                                                                                        
 


    The James B. Gordon Chapter began it’s 1975-76 year with Mrs. Janet Seippel, President reminding the chapter of it’s founding day 81 years prior on September 10, 1894.

    Members of certificates were given to:

1.        Miss Sarah Davis, who joined on the record of her grandfather, Andrew Jackson Buchanan, Co. F., Holcombe Legion, SC Infantry.
2.        Mrs. Jane Coffman Cofer, who joined on the record of Benjamin Franklin Coffman, Co. H, 33rd Virginia Infantry.
3.        Mrs. Nancy O’Hanlon Hill, who joined on the record of Duncan MacRae O’Hanlon, Sergeant, Co. F, 1st Regiment, N.C. Infantry.
4.        Mrs. Frank Payne Davis, Jr., (Elizabeth Grimes Davis) who joined on the record of Haywood Parker Watson, Co. A, 10th Battalion, N.C. Heavy Artillery.
5.        Mrs. Frank Jones (Nettie Clark Jones), Real Daughter, who joined on the record of her father, Matthew Clark, Co. G, 10th Regiment, Georgia Calvary.
6.        Miss Rebecca Mitchell, who joined on the record of Mason Tyler Mitchell, 2nd Lt., Co.H, 22nd Regiment N.C. Infantry.
    
    Memorial services were read for the following members lost during 1975-1976:

1.        Mrs. Sally Fulton Pepper- Real Daughter- was born May 12, 1894.  On Dec. 6, 1966, she joined the UDC on the record of her father, Jacob Fulton,
       Co. D., 57th Reg’t NC Inf.
2.        Mrs. Myrtle Oliver Watson- Real Daughter- was born May 13, 1891.  On Mar 31, 1925, she joined the Rocky Mount Chapter UDC on the record of her
        father John Martin Oliver, Co. C 59th VA. She transferred to the James B. Gordon Chapter in December 1928.
3.        Mrs. Elizabeth Fearrington Croom joined the UDC Oct. 15, 1911 on the record of her great-uncle, Capt. J.F. Ireland, Co. D 20th Reg’t NC

            Other reports-in-general were made: Total of  $6,975.43 in the Scholarship Fund; donations were taken for the Veterans Administration Operational Fund; active Chapter
members totaled 89; A  motion was carried to purchase supplies for a Chapter scrapbook;  Mrs. Seippel announced that Volume I of the Cemetery Records assembled by members
Mrs. Richard Sheek and Mrs. Lawrence Hartmen had been published and were now available; The 1976 convention will be held in Greensboro.

            Mrs. Seippel was awarded a plaque and medal from the Sons of Confederate Veterans for her work in perpetuating the traditions of the South.                

            Delegates elected for the 82nd General Convention to be held in Charleston, SC in November were Mrs. George Corby, Mrs. Roberson Freeman, Mrs. Ferdinand Jones and
Mrs. Charles Weaver.

            Mrs. Seippel and Mrs. Hill reported on the N.C. Division Convention which was held on October 6-9.  Mrs. Hill was selected to serve on the Committee for the Confederate
Women’s Home at the appointment of Governor Holshouser.  There are currently 21 ladies living in this home, including Mrs. Ruby Jernigan of Winston-Salem.  The Convention moved
forward on the closing plans for the purchase of the Headquarters Home located at Blount and Lane Streets, Raleigh, now the home of Mrs. J. Wilbur Bunn, the former Maude Davis
from Winston-Salem.  

            The James B. Gordon Chapter was awarded the Carrie Watson Peace Medal for excellency in all areas of UDC work, and the Pansy Blanton Petzer Bowl for the chapter doing
the best work in education.  Mrs. Seippel was elected to a three-year term as a member of the Board of Trustees of the new Headquarters Home.  She reported that landscaping and
painting have started.  She also reported that of the $3,000.00 needed for the Headquarters Building, $1,445.00 had been raised from Winston-Salem.

            The C of C Convention was scheduled for  April of 1976 and $27.35 was collected to sponsor a luncheon on Saturday.  There are currently 10 members in the C of C.  Mrs.
Seippel appealed for help with the NC Division C of C Convention to be held in Winston-Salem April 2-4 at the Hilton Inn.

    Mrs. Seippel and Miss Dodson, Recorder of Crosses, presented to Col. McCorkle three crosses:  The World War II Cross of Military Service, the Korean Conflict Cross of Military
Service and the Vietnam Service Cross of Military Service.  McCorkle’s lineal descendant is from John Jackson Hunter, Co. H, North Carolina 18th Regiment.  This is the first time in
more than fifty years that the Chapter presented three crosses to once recipient.

    A new slate of officers for 1976-78 were elected:  President- Mrs. R. Ferdinand Jones; Vice-President- Mrs. O. F. Griffith, Jr.; Second Vice-Pres.- Mrs. James F. Pierce; Third Vice-
Pres.- Mrs. Harold Weaver; Recording Sec. - Mrs. Hunter J. Byerly; Corresponding Secretary- Mrs. C.W. Bigelow; Treasurer and Assistants- Mrs. R.B. Fitzgerald, Mrs. Charles B.
Weaver and Mrs. J.J. Harris, Assistants; Historian - Miss Mary Martin; Registrar- Mrs. Roberson Freeman; Recorder of Crosses - Mrs. R.M. Hutchinson and Chaplain- Miss Elizabeth
Kapp.  Mrs. Alvin Seippel was elected Honorary President of the Chapter.

    Mrs. Seippel displayed a Bernard Baruck Fifty Cent coin issued for the Stone Mountain Monument.  She also appealed for contributions to the Ship Island UDC Memorial.  Ship
Island is an 8-mile bar twelve miles across the Mississippi Sound from Biloxi-Gulfport, which was the protection for the Mississippi River and Mobile Bay, and the UDC Memorial is the
drawbridge, or Sally Port, the only means of entering and leaving.

    On Sunday, May 2, 1976, more than 100 attended the Confederate Memorial Service held in Salem Cemetery at the site of the graves of thirty-four Confederate Soldiers.  Henry
Royal of Chapel Hill, a retired Army Colonel, spoke on “The Valor of the Confederate Soldier”.

    At the last meeting of the year, seventeen guests were introduced.  Included in the list were the Scholarship Recipients, Miss Alice Vogler, who has graduated from UNC at
Greensboro and Miss Jennie Ann Disher, who will enter Forsyth Technical Institute to study nursing.

    Speakers for this year were: George Newton Willard gave a historical program, “Spies of the Confederacy”; Mrs. Elizabeth Lumpkin Barnette gave “a delightful review of the
development of and life in each of the Southern States up to the time of the War Between the States”; Mrs. Hunter Byerly spoke on “Life in a Confederate Hospital”; and Mr. Gene Hill
spoke on “Jefferson Davis, the Statesman.”     



                                                                                                            
Summary of Minutes
                                                                                                      September 1976-June 1977

    The 1976-77 year began with the new president, Mrs. R. Ferdinand Jones, presiding.

New members welcomed into the Chapter were:

1.        Mrs. Edward Brunson Whitson (Nellie Hunter Whitson) of Pinehall transferred from the Pender County Chapter No. 761 of Burgaw, N.C.
2.        Mrs. Jennings L. Wagoner (Carolyn Nelme Phifer) who joined on the record of her great uncle, Charles E. Smith (Capt)
3.        Mrs. Angelia M. Grogan joined on the record of her great-great grandfather, William Lee Martin, Co. A., 9th Reg’t 1st Cav NC        

    Reports-in-general were:  Scholarship fund  total at years end was $7,323.64  A check for $285.50 was presented to Mrs. Seippel for the Endowment Fund of the Headquarters
Home in Raleigh in recognition of her services; Also presented was a check for the Endowment Fund for $100.00 from Miss May Speer “in memory of her father, Col. Asbury Speer, a
Confederate Veteran, in memory of her brother, Lt. Col. James Harrell Speer, Veteran of WWI, who died September 2, 1976 and in honor of Mrs. Janet Seippel, who had done so much
for the Chapter.”  Due to a new policy of the Winston-Salem Journal, UDC news, along with news of other clubs, would no longer be printed.

    Mrs. Ralph Blum, Mrs. R.B. Fitzgerald, Mrs. Roberson Freeman and Mrs. Reginald Marshall were elected Delegates to the Eightieth Annual Convention of the NC Division UDC to be
held in Greensboro in September.  

    Mrs. Seippel made an appeal for recipes to be published in a cookbook being prepared for sale for the benefit of the Memorial Building in Richmond.

    A fifty year UDC Membership pin was presented to Miss Nannie Dodson by Mrs. Alvin Seippel.  Miss Dodson, in addition to being an active member, served nine years as President,
served as chairman of the presentation of Military Crosses and completed the research for the one hundred and four Crosses presented by this Chapter.

    Mrs. Jones, Chapter President, reported on the September convention held in Greensboro.  Eleven members of our chapter were registered. Of special interest was the raising of
$1,900.00 at a Convention luncheon for the new Headquarters in Raleigh.  The James B. Gordon Chapter’s donation was made in honor of Mrs. Seippel.

    A memorial was made by Mrs. Virginia Griffith honoring Mrs. Elizabeth Croom, and one by Mrs. Seippel honoring the Veterans of all wars.

    Mrs. Ferdinand Jones, Mrs. Roberson Freeman, Sr., Mrs. Hazel Freemand and Mrs. F.A. Foxworth were elected to attend the General UDC Convention in Richmond, Virginia
November 6-10.

    Mrs. Seippel presented a list of financial obligations of the Thomas Jethro Brown Chapter of the C of C.  They have a membership of 10 and were not able to support the current C
of C projects.  $15.00 was donated by the UDC members to assist them.  

    At the June 3, 1977 meeting, Mrs. Hunter Byerly presented the Chapter with a gavel and block in honor of her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Ratcliffe.  Also, Mrs. J.R.
Fletcher, a Real Daughter, turned 100 years old on June 8th.

    Memorial services were read for the following members lost during 1976-1977:

1.        Mrs. D. Kemper Helsabeck, a Real Daughter, was born February 16, 1898 in Robeson County, NC and died May 16, 1976 in Forsyth County.  Her father was John Archibald
McKay, joined the Confederate States Navy and served with the crew of the steamer North Carolina.
2.        Mrs. Hal. W. Blackstock,  was born in 1909 in Fulton Co., GA and died December 9, 1976 in Forsyth County.  She joined on the service of her grandfather, Alveron Sanford
Hough, Co. C, 2nd GA.

    Speakers for the year were: Dr. Percival Perry, Professor of History, Wake Forest University spoke on “General Leonidas Polk, Fighting Bishop”;  Mr. John Thom Spach spoke
about John McIntosh Kell of the Raider Alabama; Mrs.Poe W. Eskridge spoke on Robert E. Lee, Thomas J. Jackson and Matthew F. Maury; Miss Annie Lee Singletary spoke on
“Plantation Management in the Old South”, and a special guest Mrs. Jane Biggers, who was a house guest of Miss Singletary, spoke on a plantation in Mississippi called “Floorewood”;
Dr. Louis B. Pope, professor at High Point College, spoke on General William Mahone; and  Mr. Fred Lewis spoke on the character traits of Jefferson Davis.

4.        Mrs. Virginia Dare Smith Tuttle on the record of Elisha Abbott, Co. G, 21st Reg’t, NC Infantry.
5.        Mrs. Catherine Elizabeth Ragland Jones, on the record of William G. Ragland, Co. G, 30th Regt., NC Inf.

    Mrs. Janet Seippel assisted Mrs. R.M. Hutchinson, chapter Recorder of Crosses, in presenting Crosses of Military Service to Harry M. Jones, Jr., WWII Cross No. 8235, Technician
5th Grade, US Army.  His lineal descendant is through  Johnathan Freeman, Co. C, NC Infantry-13th Regiment.  Mr. Joseph F. Jones received WWII Cross No. 8236, Technician 4th
Grade, U.S. Army. His lineal descendant is also through Johnathan Freeman, Co. C, NC Infantry-13th Regiment.

Memorial services were read for the following member lost during 1977-1978:

1.        Mrs. Stella Nancy Bell Johnson born January 13,1884 at Southampton County, VA and died October 9, 1977.   She joined on the service of her grandfather, Benjamin Franklin
Bell, Co. E, 7th Reg’t VA.

    Reports-in-general were:  Jane Blum Seippel Scholarship Fund balance $7,564.56. Another $15.00 was donated to the C of C Chapter.  A collection was taken for Veterans
stranded at the hospitals who needed bus fare home.

    It was announced that the Lexington Chapter would host the October 1977 NC Division Convention to be held at the Hyatt House in Winston-Salem.  The following delegates were
elected to attend:  Mrs. George Corby, Mrs. Edward Whitson, Mrs. Roberson Freeman, and Mrs. Ralph Blum. Awards received this past year were: Superior Chapter, Margaret Berry
Street bowl- for donation of largest amount of scholarships, Cadia Barbee Welborn loving cup-for placing the greatest number of books on Southern History and Literature in Public
Schools, and second place for Scrapbook.  It was also announced that the 84th General Convention would be held in Biloxi, Mississippi.  Mrs. Seippel was chosen as the only delegate.

    The Cooking for Health and Happiness cookbook has been completed and is for sale. Two dollars from the sale of each book will go to the Endowment Fund of the Memorial
Building in Richmond.

    It was decided to buy an article of comfort for the Confederate Women’s Home for the upcoming Christmas season.   At the December 9th meeting the following Real Daughters
were recognized: Mrs. Roy E. Disher, Mrs. Daniel W. Early and Mrs. C. Frank Jones.  Each was presented with a gift.  It was decided to send a poinsettia to Mr. Alvin Seippel, who was
still in the hospital recovering from a heart attack.

    The following slate of officers were elected for the next term:  President-Mrs.Charles Weaver; 1st VP- Mrs. Robert M. Allgood; 2nd VP- Mrs. F.A. Foxworth; 3rd VP-Mrs.  Harold
Weaver; Treasurer-Mrs. R.B.Fitzgerald; Assist Treas- Mrs. E.J. Markushewski and Mrs. J.J. Harris; Sec.- Mrs. Hunter J. Byerly; Corresponding Sec.- Mrs. C.W. Bigelow; Registrar- Mrs.
Reginald H. Marshall; Historian- Miss Mary Martin; Recorder of Crosses- Mrs. R.M. Hutchinson and Chaplain- Miss Elizabeth Kapp.

    The Norfleet Camp, SCV, held its Confederate Memorial Service at Salem Cemetery.  Thirty six graves were decorated with flags. On May 10, the UDC Chapter placed wreaths on
the two monuments on the Court House Square.

    Guests at the June meeting were Miss Jennie Ann Disher, our scholarship recipient and Mrs. Claude Petree, mother of Mrs. Ferdinand Jones.

    Speakers for the 1977-78 year were:  Mrs. Peggy Corby who spoke on “The Confederacy in Song and Poetry”, Miss Anne Correll, librarian, who shared a collection of letters and
old newspaper stories during the time of the War Between the States; Mrs.J.W. Goins spoke on the life of Mary Anna Morrison Jackson, wife of General Stonewall Jackson;  Mr. O.F.
Griffith, Jr. spoke on the “Ships of the Desert...the U.S. Camel Corps”; Mr. Lee Lewis who spoke on “Secesh Women” and Mr. McLean Mitchell spoke on “Where Is Our Hero Today.”

    The 1978-79 year began, president, Mrs. Charles Weaver, presiding.  She announced a new medal had been struck by the General Organization of the Stars and Bars.  The first
one was presented to Mrs. Seippel at their meeting in Asheville.

1.         Mrs. Katherine Broughton Fletcher, a Real Daughter,  was born June 8, 1877 in Clarendon Co, SC to Jackson J. and Leonara Harbin Broughton. She was admitted to
membership on the record of her father, who belonged to Co. M, SC Regiment. Mrs. Fletcher died on August 18, 1978 at the age of 101.
2.        Mrs. Virginia May Speer was born May 2, 1892 in Forsyth County.  She was admitted to membership on the record of great-uncle William H. Asbury Speer, Co. I, 28th Inf., NC.  
Mrs. Speer died on December 13, 1978.
3.        Mrs. Corinne Baskin Norfleet was born Nov. 18, 1885 and died Sept. 12, 1979. She joined the UDC on Sept. 13, 1905 on the record of her grandfather Walter Wells Troup, Co.
C, Saunders Bat., MS.
4.        Miss Nannie Elizabeth Dodson was born Oct. 10, 1893 and died Sept. 4, 1979. She joined the UDC Sept. 13, 1921 on the record of her grandfather, Dr. D.C. Pepper, who with
the manual help of negro slaves, constructed Ft. Caswell and Ft. Fisher on the NC coast.
5.        Mrs. Ilah Bullington Sohmer was born September 14, 1892 and died Dec. 19, 1979. She joined the Anne Eliza Johns Chapter UDC February 14, 1925, on the record of her
grandfather, Henry Lafayette Bullington, Co I, 21st NC Reg’t.  She transferred to the James B. Gordon Chapter on June 24, 1941.
    
    Reports-in-general were:    A check for $60 was sent to the Veterans Operational Fund; a check for $30 was sent to the N.C. Division Building and Endowment Fund in honor of our
immediate past president, Marjorie P. Jones.   Mrs. Seippel discussed the need for a probable investment of our scholarship funds in government bonds instead of leaving it in the First
Federal Savings and Loan. A motion passed to invest $6,000 in Certificates of Deposit in multiples of $500.00 at 8% for eight years.

    The new recipient of the scholarship will be Miss Katherine Tate Weaver, the granddaughter of Mrs. Charles Weaver.

    The State convention will be held at the Sheraton Motor Inn in Hickory, NC October 8-11.  The following members were elected as delegates:  Mrs. Sarah Blum, Mrs. Sara Marshall,
Mrs. L.L. Tocce, Mrs. Frances Chamberlin, Mrs. Virginia Griffith, Mrs. Lucille Tolley and Mrs. Mamie Freeman.  Mrs. Seippel was chosen as chairman of the delegation from our chapter.

    Awards received from the State Convention were:  Superior Rating, The Steele Loving cup, and the Cadia Barbee Welborn loving cup.  It was announced that the General
Convention will be held in Richmond, Nov. 9, 1978.  The following members were elected as delegates:  Mrs. George Corby, Mrs. L.L. Tocce, Mrs. Roberson Freeman, Mrs. W.E.
Newsome and Mrs. B.G. Chambers.

    At the November General Convention, Mrs. Seippel was elected to a two year term on the Board of Trustees for the General Organization.

    Real Daughters who were honored at the Christmas tea were Mrs. Daniel Early, Mrs. Frank Jones and Mrs. Roy Disher.

    It was announced that the District meeting will be held in Winston-Salem on May 19th. The State Convention of the C of C would be in Battleboro, NC in March 1979.

    On May 6th the Norfleet Camp and the James B. Gordon Chapter UDC held a Confederate Memorial Service at the Confederate plot in Salem Cemetery.  Mr. Fam Brownlee was the
speaker.

    At the June meeting forty members and guest were in attendance.  Guest included Mrs. Guy Beaver, Honorary President of the NC Division and Mrs. A.W. Fisher of the Dodson-
Ramseur Chapter.    Katherine Weaver, our Janet Blum Seippel Scholarship recipient also attended.

    Mrs. Seippel held an open house at her home in honor of the President General, Mrs. W. Zack Huggins and the N.C. Division President Mrs. N. Woodrow Jones.

    Reports-in-general:  Ten delegates from the James B. Gordon Chapter attended the October meeting held at Lake Junaluska; Mrs. Seippel was elected second Vice President
General; The Confederate Home in Fayetteville had been closed and the ladies moved to various nursing homes. The antiques which were in the home were sent to the Headquarters
Building in Raleigh.

    Much needed attention was focused on the Veterans Hospital in Salisbury.  Personal items, writing paper, pens, etc., were taken to the hospital.

    The James B. Gordon Chapter endorsed Mrs. Janet Seippel as a candidate for the office of President General. The N.C. Division hosted the General Convention of the UDC at the
Hyatt House in Winston-Salem.

    Mrs. Seippel advised the Hyatt House to return the oil portrait of Robert E. Lee and the picture of Jefferson Davis, which were on loan to them.        

    Real Daughters presented at the Tea were Mrs. Roy Disher, Mrs. Daniel Early and Mrs. C.Frank Jones.

    That year the Heritage Americana Band from Washington, DC visited Winston-Salem and performed many selections of Civil War music.

    Donations were taken for the VA Hospital in Salisbury.  The District Treasurer commended Mrs. Fitzgerald for her accuracy in handling the per captia reports.

        great uncle, Ducan MacRae O’Hanlon.

    Mrs. R.B. Fitzgerald received the Winnie Davis Medal in recognition of her many years of service to the Chapter and the Division.  Mr. E.F. Scott, Capt. M.W. Norfleet Camp #1249,
Sons of Confederate Veterans was awarded the Cross of Military Service from our Chapter.

    The design for the NC State pin had been accepted and orders were now being taken.

    The North Carolina C of C Executive Board met in 1991.  Projects and changes were: C of C members could now age out at 18.  They encouraged the members to located and
document the graves of Confederate soldiers and compile the list of cemeteries with a list of Confederate soldier graves in their surrounding area and to send their information to the
NC Division

    The Chapter was thanked by the Veterans Hospital in Salisbury for their contributions.

James B. Gordon Chapter.  She joined on the service of her great grandfather, Robert W. Drew 6th Reg. NC Cavalry.
    
    Real Daughters attending the tea were: Katherine Holmes Andrews, Sara Jane Daye, Pearl Disher and Nettie Jones.

    The Norfleet Camp invited the Chapter to the dedication of a marker for the 26th Regimental Band.

    The chapter was thanked for their generosity to the Veterans Hospital in Salisbury. The Janet Blum Seippel Scholarship recipient Margay Nanzetta was now working at the Goddard
Space Center.  She received her degree in electrical engineering.  The Mamie Freeman Essay Contest was established on March 26, 1993.

    Speakers: Mrs. R.A. Molinare spoke on Fort Sumpter; Mrs. R.F. Jones spoke on “The Woman Soldier”, Miss Nancy Petree spoke on James B. Gordon, Students from the Gifted and
Advanced Class at Chestnut Grove Jr. High, C of C presented “Poetry of the South”, and  Miss Sallie L. Greenfield spoke on Thomas Nelson Page.

    A new slate of officers were elected for the 1994-96 year:  Pres.- Mrs. Glen Rowland,, 1st VP - Mrs.  Gilbert Ashburn, 2nd VP-Mrs. Richard Winn, Jr. , 3 VP- Mrs. R.A. Molinare,

    Mrs. Philip Keever awarded a Winnie Davis medal to Mrs. Jeanne Rowland for her service to the Chapter and particularly for her service as Convention Chairman.

    Miss Nancy Petree was installed as Director for District III at the Convention in Hickory.  This year the 100th Convention and 100th year in NC was to be held in Raleigh.  Also
announced was The Hull House in Salisbury was chosen for the Commemorative Plate. Our chapter earned “The Silver Basket” award for the most new members descending from the
same ancestor.  Members were invited to celebrate the 100th birthday of Mrs. Jones, who is a Real Daughter.        

    Speakers: Mrs. Philip Keever; Mr. Chris Hartley spoke on his new book on James B. Gordon; Mr. Dave Harris spoke on the economy of the South before and after the War Between
the States; Mrs. Virginia Griffith spoke on “Osa Lee Yates --The Last Surviving Resident of the Home for Needy Confederate Women”; Sergeant Richard Charles spoke on Crime
Prevention; Laura Stallard spoke on her family during the War; Associate Member Mrs. Vogler spoke on the Favorite Pets of Gen. Robert E. Lee; and Dr. W.B. Yearns spoke on “The
Confederate Congress and North Carolina’s Part In It”.

Summary of Minutes
                                                                                             1996- March 27, 1998

    
    The newly elected President,  Mrs. Glen Rowland called the first meeting to order.  Mrs. Rowland reminded the members of the Chapter’s upcoming 100th birthday on March 30,
1998.   Cindy Casey asked each member to provide her with pictures and histories of their ancestors which will be featured in a booklet to celebrate this centennial celebration.

    Upon the resignation of Mrs. Rowland, Mrs. Eileen Cabon accepted the position of President for the duration of the year.

    Plans for the 100th birthday were made at the Executive Committee meeting.  A buffet luncheon was planned, historical music and stories would be provided and Nancy Petree and
Cindy Casey would compile a history.  Historical articles and information about the James B. Gordon Chapter would be placed in a display case at the downtown library.  Other North
Carolina Chapters would be invited.

    Mrs. Jones, our Real Daughter,  had her 101st birthday in February.  Our other Real Daughter, Mrs. Early, moved to Raleigh.  A discussion was held and motion was made to
change the name of the yearly Tea to the Real Daughters and Real Granddaughters Tea.  The motion passed unanimously.

    The C of C now had their 100th anniversary pin and members were encouraged to buy it for their own personal ribbons.

    The Department of Veterans Affairs sent a letter of thanks to our Chapter for their continuing generosity to the hospital.

    It was announced that the NC Council on Tourism was planning to make a film about the Confederate History in N.C.  The State UDC agreed to give them $500 to start with, then
each chapter would contribute $1.00 per member.

    The State Real Great Great Granddaughters Club has been organized.  Members meeting the requirements are encouraged to join.

    Cindy Casey taught the sixth graders of the Downtown Middle School how to begin their family research.  It was voted by the Chapter to award the School a plaque of
congratulations for the participation in this project.  The plaque would be named in honor of Mamie Freeman.

    On May 27, 1998, the James B. Gordon Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy celebrated their 100th Anniversary.

    Members lost during the year:
    
1.        Mrs. Alma Denny Taylor who died Nov. 20, 1996. Mrs. Taylor joined the UDC on Jan. 15, 1941 on the record of her great grandfather, Francis Rutherford Stone of Co. K, 51st
VA Reg’t.

    

    New Members:

1.        Emily Ann Green who joined the UDC June 15, 1996 on the record of her great great great grandfather, Julius Day, Co. 2nd B, Reg’t 42 NC Inf.
2.        Mary Elizabeth Weaver Evans transferred from the Children of the Confederacy on June 15.
3.        Lelia Jones (Neal) Essic who joined the UDC on May 31, 1997 on the record of her grandfather Thomas Chalmers Neal,, NC 1st Jr. Res. NC.
4.        Mary Ellen (Essic) Candillo who joined the UDC on May 31, 1997 on the record of her grandfather Thomas Chalmers Neal,, NC 1st Jr. Res. NC.
