If you were a member of the US Armed Forces, you may be eligible to receive The Crosses of Military
Service and Medals awarded by the James B. Gordon Chapter of Winston-Salem, NC. Deceased
Veterans are also eligible.
The Crosses of Military Service and Medals currently bestowed by the UDC are an outgrowth of the Southern
Cross of Honor, which could only be worn by a Confederate Veteran. These Crosses and Medals are
awarded to veterans who have served or are serving in defense of America. They are the most prized
awards conferred by the UDC.
Eligibility:
1. Proposed recipient shall be a lineal blood descendant of a Confederate Soldier or Sailor who rendered
honorable military service, and did not take Oath prior to April 9, 1865.
2. Proposed recipient shall have served at least ninety (90) days on active duty and have received an
honorable discharge or have remained on active military duty. Those eligible to receive a National Defense
Medal may receive only one medal.
3. If still in service, proposed recipient shall furnish one notarized copy of statement from current
commanding officer as to present status in military service. If proposed recipient is an officer, a statement
with officer's signature as to rank and service will be acceptable.
These are the requirements for the various Medals:
WORLD WAR I: April 5 1917 - November 11, 1918
WORLD WAR II: Dec 8, 1941 - Dec 21 1946
KOREAN WAR: June 27, 1950 - Nov 11, 1955, in Korea, or in land/in airspace/in waters contiguous thereto
VIETNAM CONFLICT: July 6, 1964 - March 28, 1973

NATIONAL DEFENSE MEDAL: May be presented to anyone qualifying, who served in any branch of the
armed forces, including the Merchant Marines, during conflicts listed. State National Guard units also qualify
if they were on active duty during the specified dates as listed. For men and women who served in the armed
forces on active duty, but do not qualify for the Korean and Vietnam Cross of Military Service. Or to those
who served at least ninety (90) days on active duty during the Persian Gulf (Desert Sheild/Desert Storm) in
accordance with the requirements below. The National Defense Medal are presented through UDC
Chapters, Divisions and General. A copy of the proposed recipient's Honorable Discharge, if available,
Service Record (DD214) and Ancestor's Confederate Military Service Record is required. Photocopy of
documents of proof are acceptable: KOREAN CONFLICT: Shall have served on active duty between June 27,
1950 and November 11, 1955, but did not serve on land or in airspace or waters contiguous to Korea.
VIETNAM CONFLICT: Shall have served on active duty between Jan 1, 1961 - Aug 14, 1974, not in Vietnam or
in land/in airspce/in waters contiguous thereto (note that time frame is longer than it is for the Vietnam
Conflict Cross of Military Service): PERSIAN GULF (Desert Shield/Desert Storm): Shall have served on active
duty between August 2, 1990 and November 30, 1995
PIONEER IN SPACE award is presented to men and women who are lineal blood descendants of
Confederate military personnel and who have flown in space.
MERITORIOUS SERVICE AWARD is presented to veterans who are collateral descendants of
Confederate military personnel and who have given military service to our country in certain time frames.

PIONEERS IN SPACE

EXPLANATION:
1. Operation - A Military action or the carrying out of a strategic, tactical, service, training, or administrative military
mission; the process of carrying on combat including movement, supply, attack, defense, and maneuvers needed to
gain the objectives of any battle or campaign.
2. Area of Operations:
A. The foreign territory upon which troops have actually landed or are present and specifically deployed for the
direct support of the designated military operation.
B. Adjacent water areas in which ships are operating, patrolling, or providing direct support of operations.
C. The airspace above and adjacent to the area in which operations are being conducted.
3. Direct Support: - Services being supplied the combat forces in the area of operation by ground units, ships, and
aircraft providing supplies and equipment to the forces concerned, provided it involves actually entering the
designated area, and ships and aircraft providing fire, patrol, guard, reconnaissance, or other military support.
ELIGIBILITY:
1. Recipient shall be a lineal blood descendant of a confederate Soldier or Sailor who rendered honorable military
service, and did not take Oath prior to April 9, 1865.
2. Recipient shall have served in the armed forces at least ninety days and in an "Operation" no less than 30
consecutive days. Recipient must have received an Honorable Discharge or have remained on active military duty.
Those eligible to receive an Armed Forces Expeditionary Service Medal may receive only one medal.
3. If still in service, recipient shall furnish one notarized copy of statement from current commanding officer as to
present status in military service. If proposed recipient is an officer, a statement with officer's signature as to rank
and service will be acceptable.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Must be a bona fide member of a unit and engaged in the operation, or meet one or more of the following criteria:
A. Must have served not less than 30 consecutive days in the area of operation.
B. Must have been in direct support of the operation for thirty consecutive days
C. Must have been engaged in actual combat, or duty which is equally as hazardous as combat, during the
operation with armed opposition.
D. Must have participated as regularly assigned crew member of an aircraft flying into, out of, within, or over the
area in support of the military operation.
