JAMES B. GORDON CHAPTER, U.D.C., OBSERVES BIRTHDAY OF JEFFERSON DAVIS
The James B. Gordon Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, held its final meeting of the year Wednesday afternoon at 3:30
o'clock at the  home of Mrs. Walker Powell, 613 Summit Street.  Associate hostesses were Mesdames Marshall Cobb, Fred Watson,
David Reid Jr., J.M. Lentz, John Ogburn, Ray Johnson.  This meeting celebrated the 128th anniversary of the birthday of Jefferson Davis.

The meeting opened with the salute to the flag, after which the president,
Miss Nannie Dodson , presided at the business session of
the afternoon.  The minutes of the secretary, Miss Margaret Poindexter, were read and approved, and the treasurer's report was given by
Miss Bessie Blum, assistant treasurer, in the absence of Mrs. E.L. Pfohl, who is suffering from a broken ankle.

Miss Josephine Reece, president of the Children of the Confederacy, gave an excellent report on the splendid activities of that chapter,
whose advisor is Miss Ida Hinshaw.  In telling in detail of the many accomplishments of the C. of C., Miss Reece summed up the various
projects by saying that all had been contributed to by the chapter, and that the amount disbursed during the year amounted to $400.42.

Mrs. R.P. Reece reported that the Jefferson Davis  highway maps that have been received by the chapter, will be sent, one to the
Chamber of Commerce and the other, framed, will be hung in Carnegie Library.  One new name was mentioned for membership in the
chapter.  Mrs. A.C. Chamberlain, chairman of veterans, announced that she had sent five boxes of candy to the five veterans in the city
and county.  She gave a very interesting account of visits made to the homes of these veterans and to a widow of a veteran whose
birthday fell on May 10, to whom she sent a gift.

Miss Dodson thanked all daughters who assisted in the 10th of May celebration and those who took part in the celebration and parade on
May 30.  It was announced that Mrs. Riggans has asked that all contributions of jellies and preserves to be sent to the Woman's
Confederate Home in Fayetteville, be sent to her  home, 607 West Fifth street, not later than June 15.  Mrs. Riggans will pack the things
and send them to the home..

An invitation from the regent, Mrs. Julius Neely, was received to attend the Flag Day celebration and marking of the boulder in memory of
General Joseph Winston two miles north of Germanton.  The huge boulder which now marks the spot will be unveiled by two young girls,
descendants of General Winston.  This celebration is sponsored by the Gen Joseph Winston Chapter, Daughters of the American
REvolution.

Mrs. H.L. Riggans spoke in an interesting manner of her visit to the district conference held recently at Lexington.  She spoke of the pride
felt by the members in the  honor received by Mrs. C.M. Sawyer, who was elected district recording secretary.  Mrs. R.P. Reece and Mrs.
C.M. Sawyer also attended this meeting.  It was announced that the report given at the district meeting by Miss Ida Hinshaw of the
wonderful work accomplished by the Children of the Confederacy of Winston-Salem, was the best report given and was accorded
recognition to that effect.

Mrs. R.P. Reece spoke of the education of descendants of veterans, which was discussed at the same meeting, adding that several
hundred thousands of dollars had been invested in this project.  Miss Ida Hinshaw gave a splendid talk on  Jefferson Davis  highway, his
picture in the Hall of Fame, and many splendid scholarships are only a few of these monuments to the greatness and character of this
man whose 128th birthday anniversary was celebrated yesterday.

The hostess served delicious strawberry ice cream and chocolate cake.  About fifty members were present.
