                                                          CAPT. J. C. BESSENT

The Popular Captain of the Forsyth
                                                  Riflemen--One of  the Best
                                                     Known Military Men in
                                                             North Carolina
                                                                   --------
His Company the First to Land at
                                          Havana During the Spanish War
                                                                    --------

Imperial, The popular gentleman and soldier is a native of Davie Co., where he was
born in 1855.  Since 1874, however, he has made Winston his home.  From 1874 to
1882 he was in the tobacco business and was elected city tax collector in the latter
year, an office he filled with great credit to himself and the city.  His term of office
expired in May 1891, and since then Capt. Bessent has devoted himself to insurance,
at the same time being a justice of the peace and notary public.

He represent only the best companies and writes a large amount of business.  His
companies are the Manchester of England, and Lancashire and the both English
concerns, and the United State, of New York.

Capt. Bessent’s military record is one of which any man might be proud.  On March 26,
1878, he enlisted in Co. A and Regt. N. G. N. C., and in November 1878, was made
corporal.  March 26, 1879, found him wearing the three chevrons of the sergeant.  On
June 7, 1886, he was made 1st Lieut. and became Captain of his company three years
later.

On April 27, 1898, when Winstons’ military company became Co. C, 1st N.C. Volunteer
Infantry, Captain Bessent received his commission from the government as Captain.
This company was in camp at Raleigh, Jacksonville and Savannah.  On Dec. 11, 1898,
they landed at Havana, Cuba, being the first American troops to enter that city.  Capt.
Bessent may well appreciate their honor.  The members of the company left Havana,
March 25, 1899, embarking for Savannah, Ga., where they were mustered out on April
22.

The company had 115 men in its ranks from first to last and was visited by death only
once during the time of active service.  Private Chas. A. Johnson died from fever at
Havana, Mar. 8, 1899.  When the company was reorganized, June 26, ‘99, Capt.
Bessent was again chosen commanding officer.  He is a typical soldier by nature and
his ability as an officer, as shown in the Spanish war, was not surpassed by any man in
the volunteer service.
MENDEL WILL HAVE MILITARY FUNERAL
Body of Spanish War Veteran to Be Interred Sunday Afternoon

Dec. 21, 1930 - Funeral services for Millard F. Mendel, 47, who died suddenly
Sunday night at his rooming house, 622 North Liberty street, will be held Sunday
afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at Bodenheimer Funeral Home.  D.V. Carter, commander of
the local camp of Spanish War Veterans, and Samuel J. Reich, chaplain of the local
and state organizations, will conduct the funeral which will be a military one.  Burial will
be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, west of Reynolda and will be
the first body to be
interred there.
A firing squad from Co. G, 120th infantry, under the command of
Capt. Walter B. Williams, will assist in the funeral.  The local camp of Spanish War
Veterans claimed the body after it was learned that Mendel's wife,
Mrs. Maisie
Mendel,
Hedgesville, Route 1, W. Va. informed  Commander Carter that she was
financially unable to give it the proper burial.  Mendel came to this city November 1.
Relatives were located through papers of his used in obtaining a pension from the
government for his service during the Spanish-American War.
THE UNION REPUBLICAN - July 9, 1903

Truly Patriotic:
Ever since the Spanish-American war there has been a very pretty
and appropriate service held in front of Salem Academy early every 4th of July
morning, which tends to instruct the young and remind the older citizens of the truly
patriotic intents and purpose of the day.  A short address is made, songs are sung,
patriotic literature is read and national airs are played by the Band.
