FORSYTH COUNTY  HOME
AND  REFORMATORY

FORSYTH COUNTY TO RAZE OLD REFORMATORY

BUILDING PUT IN USE NEARLY 40 YEARS AGO - Used Until Recently as Negro Branch of the
County Home

Forsyth county's old reformatory, which has led a chameleonic existence, will soon abandon its
present form and blend itself into a new county property. For 15 years, until early in 1937, the
reformatory had been the Negro branch of the
Forsyth County Home. Prior to that, for a quarter of
a century, it was the Forsyth County reformatory, round-up place for youthful delinquents.
It held many a youngster whose ways were wayward in those days.  But it passed from that stage.
The building on the Walkertown road, beyond the end of North Liberty, housed Negro aged and
feeble-minded until the new Forsyth County Hospital was completed.  Since early this year, it has
been abandoned, falling into disrepair.  Now, its very position has decided its fate. It stands
alongside the Winston-Salem airport.  It obstructs the view to the site of the new air terminal from the
Walkertown road.  So, it will be razed. Its bricks will be cleaned by WPA workmen after the building
has been leveled. The bricks will be used in building the air terminal.  They won't supply all that is
necessary for the terminal, but they will go a long way. Other material for the building will be supplied
by local interests.  WPA labor will be used to construct the terminal.  Plans for the terminal recently
were approved. Construction of the terminal is expected to get underway between December 1 and
January 1, Charles E. Norfleet, Chamber of Commerce airport committee chairman said yesterday.
