Nov 16, 1893 UNION REPUBLICAN
THE POOR HOUSE AGAIN: The County Poor House question so severely criticised by Dr. Broughton is still a source of comment. It is said that the
attention of Gov. Carr has been called to the matter and what action he may deem proper will be made through His Honor Judge Winston at the
December Term of Forsyth Court. The Commissioners, however, take time by the forelock and appoint a Committee comprising Messrs H.E. Fries,
P.A. Wilson, and R.L Cox to visit the Poor House and report its condition. This these gentlemen did Monday and will possibly make their report this
week. A number of necessary improvements are needed, which, will doubtless be included in the report. In the mean time all honor to Dr. Broughton
for his timely arraignment of matters generally in and around this Asylum for the unfortunate. If he had not made the disclosures how long would it
have remainded, as he claims, a disgrace to the county? Every community needs several Dr. Broughton's, it would seem.
JULY 7, 1898 UNION REPUBLICAN
The Union Grove Reform Club offer a lot 70 by 100 feet for sale on Water Avenue, Blumtown, the proceeds to be devoted to providing wood and
provisions for the poor of Winston. D. Knott, B.A. Johnson and H.C. Wooters, Trustees of the Club, have the matter in charge. It evinces an
exemplary spirit of charity in its truest sense.
