May 12, 1892 The Republican: A SAD DEATH. - It has been our duty to chronicle many deaths, but none as sad or more sudden than that of Mr. John
Wimmer, Jr., at the residence of his father, Main Street, Salem, last Sunday evening, a little past 8 o'clock, at the age of 30 years. The deceased was subject to
heart trouble, but was enjoying apparently good health during the day, and visited a number of places both morning and afternoon. Late in the evening, however,
in company with his brother-in-law, Mr. Jones, he reached home in a physically feeble condition and was scarcely assisted to his room before the spark of life fled.
His death was evidently due to heart trouble aided by an over-dose of bromidia which had been taken to quiet his nervous system from an undue use of alcoholic
stimulants during the week. We knew him from boyhood and saw him almost daily. Always found him social, free hearted, and possessed of a good business
turn, and his worst enemy self. Twice he was married and leaves a wife, two children, a father and two brothers as survivors in the immediate family circle, to
whom our sympathies are extended in this particularly sad demise. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. John McCuiston and the remains interred in the
Salem Cemetery Monday evening.
Feb. 10, 1898 - Union Republican- DEATH OF AGED AND REPRESENTATIVE CITIZEN
At the age of 90 years, Mr. George Wilson, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of this county entered into rest, near Kernersville, N.C., Feb. 3rd.
Politically, the deceased was a Democrat and represented Forsyth County in the Legislature in 1883. His opponent was the late John D. Tavis. He leaves quite a
large estate, including a valuable farm, to his children, about 8 in number. Some years ago Mr. Wilson became a member of the Moravian Church. He gave the
site for a church which is now in the course of construction at Bluff, near the late home of the deceased. The funeral services were conducted Saturday by Rev. E.
S. Crosland, pastor of the Moravian Church at Kernersville.
George W. Wilson was born January 10, 1810 to James Wilson and Ann Adams. Many believe that James came to America in 1807 from County Down,
Ireland to Philadelphia. Ann Adams, whom he met on the ship, was from Ulster. The Wilson’s had 10 children--seven boys and three girls. Of the 10, Henry,
Edwin and Margretta were triplets.
After settling in the Talley’s Crossing community, George W. Wilson accumulated approximately 1400-1700 acres of land and several slaves. In November
1836, he married Julia A. Hastings in Stokes County. She was born December 12, 1818 and died March 19, 1901. They had ten children and their
descendants include Wilson’s, Peddycords, Motsingers, Sapps, Popes, Beesons, Smiths, Kerners and several others. The couple are buried in the Kernersville
Moravian cemetery.
[The first deed for George W. Wilson in Stokes County is dated 1843. He purchased land “on water of Muddy Creek ” and was referred to as “of Henry County,
Virgiinia.” Other Stokes County deeds were in 1847. Wilson’s first deed in Forsyth County was in 1853. In 1854, Thomas Voss sold land to George Wilson “on
the waters of Belews Creek.” This places George not too far from Kernersville, in the Talley’s Crossing vicinity. (Note: Research on this family has not been
done by the editor. Sources were found in the Wilson Family vertical file in the NC Room and from the Kernersville News, April 14, 1977.]
