Mr. S. O. Ogburn, of Winston, was in Greensboro recently, hunting for the heirs of Memory B. Tatum and his brother Joseph, both of whom died near or in Meridan, Texas. These
Tatums went from North Carolina, and it is believed from Guilford County. They have died without heirs, as far is known, in Texas. There are a good many of the name in this
section, and the estates are said to be very large ones. It might pay for some of the name to look into this matter. A few million dollars in old Guilford would be very acceptable about
this season of the year.

PANTHER CREEK GOSSIP- Mr. DAVID CROTZ living near Panther Creek and at an advanced age was (from what I learn) stricken with paralysis on Sunday evening the 24th
instant. And lived till next morning about 9 o’clock, when his soul took its flight.
We have another case of paralysis on the preceding Saturday, LINA KIMBROUGH, an old colored woman, when on her way to the Post Office was stricken speechless and
motionless in Miss S. R. NORMAN’S yard just a short distance from the house. Some of the neighbors carried her back home in a wagon, and on Sunday evening following she
died. Just before she died she opened her eyes, but never spoke.
A FORMER WINSTONITE KILLED—In the news columns of the State press we notice the following item going the round, announcing the sad death of a gentleman well known to this
community in past years. For authenticity and particulars the following speaks for itself:
A special to the Wilmington Messenger states that at Rocky Mount last week, Mr. R. W. DALLIS, an old man from Winston, in trying to cross the tracks in front of a shifting engine,
was run over and instantly killed. When the engine struck him, he rolled up on the pilot and then down again across the track and was cut in two. All the wheels of the engine and
tender passed over him.
Panther Creek, N. C. April 26, 1892
On Tuesday of last week, a young colored girl by the name of MORRISON, who lived with the family of WESLEY HARRIS, colored, about 4 miles down the Yadkin below Wilkesboro,
was burned so badly that it resulted in her death. She had raked together some weeds and trash, set fire to the pile, from which her dress caught fire. Her sister ran up and began
to put out the fire, but she jerked loose and ran down the hill as fast as she could, until her clothes were consumed. She was burned to a crisp almost all over. She lived nearly 24
hours afterwards, and died.
Near Smith Grove, Davie county, April 20th, ROS. WALKER, aged 16 years and a son of JOHN WALKER, chose a horrible end. He had been plowing, and during the afternoon
went to the house, procured a gun and placing it under his chin discharged the weapon with a stick, blowing his head to atoms. No reason is assigned for the deed, unless it was
simply for want of reason.
PIONEER DANIEL BOONE—Hunters have a roving disposition and the pioneer, Daniel Boone, was not an exception. Among his many places of abode there is one claimed for him in
our neighbor county of Davidson, ten miles from Lexington, where may be seen the den or cave once occupied by this rugged old warrior as a rendezvous, and near this his primitive
cabin stood, though the latter is now entirely obliterated. The hearth stone of his abode is yet preserved. An effort will be made to have this hearthstone exhibited at the World’s
Fair at Chicago in 1893.
A SAD DEATH—It has been our duty to chronicle many deaths, but none as sad or more sudden than that of Mr. JOHN WIMMER, JR. At the residence of his father, Main Street,
Salem, last Sunday evening, a little past 8 o’clock, at the age of 30 years.
THE COMMUNITY was grief stricken yesterday morning upon learning that little HATTIE MAUD, a sweet and loving little daughter of F. D. and ANNIE HOLCOMB passed from this
world of sorrow into the mansions of glory. She died of pneumonia fever and was buried today at Center. Funeral services conducted by Rev. M. H. LONG in an able and impressive
manner from the text, “blessed are the dead that die in the Lord.” Christ says: Suffer little children to come unto me for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” So little Hattie has gone
home with Christ to live. May the parents meet little Hattie on the other shore where they will part no more. E. J. Center, N.C.

GERMAN COACH STALLION
YOUNG MALADOR
Registered No 1328 in German stud book. One of the very best bred German Coach Stallions ever imported. The friends of the German Coach horses claim that they are the
general purpose horse of the world. They have been victorious everywhere in the show ring. This superb young horse will be allowed to serve a limited number of mares at my farm
one mile east of Winston. For further information and terms address R. J. REYNOLDS, Winston, NC.
From Davie County Times-The Bethel Alliance has bought Mrs. E. KIMBROUGH a fine cow in the place of one that died recently. Mr. J.W. McCULLOCH raised the money and
thanks all that helped in this good cause. Mrs. KIMBROUGH is the widow of DAVID KIMBROUGH who died a year ago last April, leaving her in straightened circumstances.
Mr. WILLIAM M. FORESTER, aged 98 years, who resides four miles from this place, is the oldest inhabitant in Wilkes county. He is the father of Rev. J. S. FORESTER, of this place,
and is live for a man of his great age. It was our pleasure on Monday to receive a call from him, and to hear him relate many of his “ups and downs”. He issued the licenses for the
marriage of ENG and CHANG BUNKER, the once famous Siamese Twins, to Misses SALLIE and ADELAIDE YATES.
Ex-COUNTY TREASURER LINVILLE DEAD—At his home a few miles southwest of this city, May 12th, ROBERT LINVILLE, Esq. Breathed his last at the age of 69 years. The
deceased was for many years Treasurer of this county, which office he filled as a Republican with faithfulness and to the satisfaction of all. He also gave especial care to a well kept
vineyard and nursery, in addition to general farming operations. And his offerings upon the market were always the best of their kind. As a husband and father he was kind and
affectionate, and as a citizen, honest, loyal and in every respect one, whose death the county has reason to deplore. As a testimonial of high esteem in which he was held, the
funeral services last Friday were largely attended by people both town and country, who gathered to pay the last sad tribute of respect to one of God’s noblest works—a just man—
and no one could desire a more fitting memorial.
Mrs. CAROLINE FAW, who resides at Miller’s Creek, this county, was in town last week. She is seventy-one years of age and has 53 grandchildren and twenty great grand children.
June 9, 1892
ATTEMPTED TO COMMIT SUICIDE—Near Pilot Mountain, Surry county, June 1st, a Miss FLIPPEN, aged about 20 years and daughter of JOSPH FLIPPEN, Esq., made an effort to
destroy life by cutting her throat with a pen knife. When discovered her injuries were such as to render her recovery doubtful. She was unable to talk but wrote that her reason for
so doing was that she was a deceiver in the church, having not lived up to her obligations and even in her feeble condition preferred death to life.
Mrs. BUNCH Dead—In Kernersville, N.C. June 2nd, Mrs. BUNCH, a very estimable lady and the wife of Rev. W. A. BUNCH, President of the North Carolina Methodist P. Conference

health for quite a long while. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn their loss. His remains will be interred in the M.E. cemetery tomorrow afternoon.
Two Deaths-- Mr. J.A. WALKER, died at his home in this city yesterday evening aged about 35 years. The deceased was a painter by trade, a highly esteemed citizen,, and whose

Antioch Church, tomorrow.
In Salem-- suddenly, this morning, Mr. William F. SHULTZ, breathed his last. Some years ago the deceased was partially stricken with paralysis and has in consequence been in
feeble health for some time. The deceased had a cold for about a week, and this morning had a coughing spell which burst a paralyzed blood vessel leading to the heart which Dr.
SIEWERS the attending physician states caused instant death. Mr. SHULTZ was an old and respected citizen of Salem, a skilled mechanic and for many years conducted a
flourishing cabinet making business until impaired health necessitated a cessation from actual duty. His age was 60 odd years. Two sons JOHN S. and G. RUFUS SHULTZ, and one
daughter MISS SOPHIA survive in the immediate family circle.

A SHOT GUN TO THE FRONT—Last Wednesday a difficulty occurred between Mr. MAT ZIGLAR and his son-in-law, Mr. EDWARD BANNER, two respectable farmers living a short
distance Northeast of the city. BANNER, it seems, owned the property upon which ZIGLAR lives, and having disposed of the same, requested possession. Warm words followed and
the end was that BANNER procured his double-barreled shot gun and emptied one barrel at ZIGLAR, the load scattering over his face and body. The wounds are quite painful, but it
is thought, not of a serious nature. That members of a family frequently disagree is to be deplored. Peace ‘twixt man and man and woman is a blessed state of existence and borders
upon the divine nature. The individual that conquers the human in this respect has made a good start upon the way to a better life.
A very sad accident occurred at Buck Shoal, Yadkin county, last week. SANTA SALMONS, a son of Mr. and Mrs. RUFUS SALMONS, was instantly killed by a molasses mill. He was
driving the stock and stepped upon a chain when the sweep came around and caught his head against the post, bent his head over, broke his neck and crushed the back part of the
skull. He was about 11 years old.
Nov 24, 1892
From Elkin Times: A son of Mr. John Kennedy, living near State Road, accidentally shot himself Saturday. He had been hunting, and on returning home was standing near the
house with the stock of his gun resting on the porch while he was leaning on the barrel, the gun slipped and its contents were emptied into his body killing him instantly.
REV. C.L. WHITAKER MARRIED: It was not the intention of Rev. C.L. WHITAKER of the Methodist Protestant Church, this city, to attend Conference singly and alone, and en route

Death of Col. Charles Shober -- Col. Charles E. Shober died in Greensboro Tuesday, from kidney trouble from which he had been a sufferer for some time. The deceased was a
native of Salem and was a son of the late Col. Emanuel Shober, and a brother of Mrs. W.H. Wheeler and Mrs. B.F. Crosland, of Salem, and Col. Frank Shober of Salisbury. The
Record, speaking of his demise says:
Col. Shober was in his 63rd years, and came to Greensboro from Salem, N.C. before the war and studied law under J. A. Gilmer, whose daughter he married first. He represented
this county in the legislature, and in 1862 entered the Confederate army as Colonel of the 45th N.C. regiment. Afterwards he was made Lieut. Colonel of the 2nd batallion.
His death is a sad one. Col. Shober has been one of our wealthiest men. For many years he was a partner in the banking house of Wilson & Shober. In the days of his prosperity
he was very king to very many persons. He was never ___ and avaricious, and many a man has been helped by his benevolence. But in 1878 his fortune was swept away, without
fault of his own, and since that time he has had a bitter struggle with poverty.
He was a singularly honest and up right man, and also a sensitive one. His misfortunes and his inability to pay what he owned worried him greatly. He worried over this continually.
Misfortune having overtaken him it seemed that, struggle as he would, he could never again get upon his feet. Yet he was a man of good mind and fine business habits and
knowledge. He was liberally educated and had intellectual tastes. He leaves a wife and a large family of children.
Dec 1, 1892
Mr. JOSHUA SHEPHERD of Union Township was in town Tuesday and informed us of a marriage which took place in his section last Sunday. The parties marrying were GEORGE
FARRINGTON of Ashe and ELISABETH ROYAL of Wilkes. They were not exactly the same age, the old man being only 62 and the old lady 16 years old. It’s bad on our Wilkes boys
that “the oldest there is about” in Ashe can come across the line and take their girls from them.

FORSYTH PENSIONERS—Upon the first page will be found an article concerning pension, who are entitled and the amount received. Below we publish a list of those in this county
for whom Register of Deeds KOEHLN has received checks under the pension roll. Their names have been printed in these columns before, and a close observer will notice that the
list grows shorter as the years go by, as one by one they are being called upon to answer the roll call with a majority of their departed comrades upon the other side. In addition is
also the names of widows entitled to pensions, at least as many who have remained unmarried, and there is a goodly number, forty two.

JOHN PINKNEY SCALES PASSES AWAY---At Sandy Ridge, Stokes county, Dec. 14th, Mr. John Pinkney SCALES passed away at the age of 84 years, 5 months and 5 days. The
deceased was born in Patrick county, VA, July 9, 1808 and died about one mile from the place of his birth. June 1, 1828 Mr. Scales was married to Miss Judith H. SHELTON of Henry
County and their union was blessed with 9 children, among the surviving members being Mr. Jas. S. SCALES of this city. The deceased was educated in the country schools and at
the Academy in Madison, with the late Nathaniel Boyden, Esq., instructor, and Mr. Scales was the first student enrolled at the latter institution. Since 1857 the deceased has been
afflicted with rheumatic trouble which has rendered him comparatively helpless and unable to take physical exercise from that date to the day of his death although possessed of a
remarkable constitution and perfect mental faculties. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Peter HUTCHINSON, and the remains committed to rest in the family burying ground
near Sandy Ridge.the entire charge entering Evan’s neck, killing him instantly. It is the opinion that gun was thoughtlessly left cocked and by some cause, either the jar in letting it
down upon the floor, or striking the trigger, the fatal discharge was made. Coroner BAST decided that it was not necessary to hold a inquest. The remains were entered at Union
Grove on Sunday afternoon, Rev. H. A. BROWN holding the service.

self defense. He is a married man and has a wife and one child living in Salisbury, and claims to be 23 years of age, and is a barber by trade. This case will, in all probability, be
heard at the February term of Forsyth Superior Court.

and enduring until the end.
