1856:page 6008, Aug 21 [1856]:  "In the afternoon at 5 o'clock Br.
Bahnson held the funeral of Dr. Leopold Fries, who was buried in
the public burial ground at Liberty.  There was a large crowd of
people on hand to hear what  would be said on this sad occasion.
The poor man had brought his life to an untimely end due to
drunkenness and dissipation.  The sermon on Deuteronomy 32:29
was held under the trees in front of the Protestant Methodist

UNION REPUBLICAN - MARCH 1, 1900-A. GROGAN
FOUND DEAD:  In Salem, Monday morning, Mr. A. Grogan
was found dead in his bed at his home on Liberty Street.
The deceased was about 70 years of age.  He had been in
feeble health for some time and his sudden taking off is
attributed to heart affliction and the consequent infirmmities
of old age.  The remains were interred with Masonic honors
in the Liberty Graveyard, Tuesday.

INFORMATION FROM WINGER-SMITH SURVEY OF 2006 IS IN RED
INFORMATION FROM CINDY CASEY IS IN PURPLE
iNFORMATION IN BLACK FROM DON RHYNE
Vol XI, 1852-1879- Diary of Salem Congregation For the Year 1856:

pg 6006, June 1 [1856]:  "After 5 pm Br. Bahnson held the funeral of the young Howlett, and this in Liberty.  A good number of
persons attended it."

"Winston & Salem:  Tales of Murder, Mystery and Mayhem" by Jennifer Bean Bower.

A Six-Year Old Boy Drowned in Salem Lake:  "...."Although he [Shirley Shepherd Bolin] was orginally interred in the Liberty Cemetery beside Ivy
Avenue, his grave, along with the others, was moved to a location on Hanes Mill Road in 1940 due to a road-widening project.  Unfortunately,
however, there is no record of Shirley Bolin in Liberty Cemetery.  Perhaps he, like his mother, was buried without a headstone, and great
efforts will have to be made to locate it.  Fortunately, his mother's grave was located and marked in 2006, which leaves  hope that one day little
Shirley's hallowed grave will at last be found again. [Parents were
George T. Bolin and Nancy Rosa Hutchens]
