Kernersville Sketch from 1873
People’s Press, February 20, 1873
Mr. Editor:--Perhaps a few words about Kernersville may not be uninteresting to you readers. Our village is beautifully situated and
noted for health. We have four stores, two cabinet shops, a blacksmith shop, a carriage and buggy shop, a tin shop, a harness shop, a
tan yard, a steam-saw-mill, [and] a sassafras mill. A tobacco factory and ware-house will soon be in operation. A number of new
buildings are now going up, and several have bought lots and speak of building soon.
We have four doctors, one minister, one dentist, between eight and twelve carpenters, to say noting of the rest of the fraternity.
We have a good brick school house near the centre of the village and good schools for boys and girls under the charge of Prof.
Ray, an experienced teacher. Board can be had for students to either of these schools at $8 per month. The Railroad is completed to
this place, or at least, we have seen the smoke and heard the whistle at the depot. The Railroad company has sunk a well 36 feet in
circumference at a cost of about $500.
The town is incorporated and no spirituous liquor is kept for sale by anyone.
We have [two] churches, a Methodist and Moravian, who unite in worship on the friendliest terms and the people are noted for
church going.
With all the advantages mentioned Kernersville is destined to improve, and we give a hearty invitation to sober, intelligent
industrious men to settle here.
