Genl:

   I would humbly beg your permission to take the Oath of True Allegiance to the United States and go to my relatives
who live in Rush County, Indiana.  I am a native of North Carolina and kept out of the army until October 1864 when
myself and 3 others attempted to reach your lines by way of East Tennessee and had arrived within a few miles of
there when ....... we were captured by a Scout of Cavalry belonging to Genl. H. Vaughn’s command bobbed (?) and
sent to Richmond, VA, and kept at Castle Thunder two weeks and then sent to Co. I, 21st Reg NC Troops and your
petition was so closely watched so as to make conversation impossible but all of  his party; namely, J.W. Gilmer,
William Gilmer, and J.C. Gilmer have succeeded in deserting the Rebel Army and are now in Rush County, Indiana.  
These facts can be proved by their affidavits of ......   ......  Your petitioner was willing ..........were captured 5
February 1865 having been in the Rebel Army only a little more than 2 months.

Note:  This letter may have affected John C. Gilmer.  There is a monument at the Old Methodist Cemetery in Mt. Airy,
NC, which says:
